04.25.08 King's Athletic Department Announces Annual Award Winners!

Rocky Thompson

Edmonton, AB.— The King’s University College Athletic Department held it’s Annual Athletic Banquet on Monday, April 14th to announce their Athletic Award winners. The evening event was held at the University and attended by over 100 athletes, parents and special guests. The guest speaker for the evening was Rocky Thompson, the Edmonton Oil King’s Assistant Coach who gave a powerful and challenging talk that fit into the theme of the evening.

Coaches from each of the teams announced their annual winners (see below) and Craig Wilsman, the King’s Director of Athletics also announced the winners of several special awards such as Student Life Award for Athletics which were won by Irene Tang and Anthony Skepple. The King’s Most Outstanding Athletes Trophy Female Recipient went to All-Conference/All-Canadian 4th year Basketball player; Maia deKlerk. The Male Recipient winner was All-Conference Volleyball player; Jonathan Whitton. The athlete of the year trophy is the most prestigious and coveted achievement an athlete can receive. This award recognizes a female and male student-athlete who demonstrates the highest degree of athletic excellence among their peers and a tribute to their school both on and off the field/court.

Wilsman also announced the winners for the Bald Eagles Project which was the Women’s Basketball team who started their admirable “Have You Ever Seen a Bald Eagle Before?!” Breast Cancer Fundraiser in October. They had a tremendous impact on the players and the community, the King’s athletic department decided to implement an annual Bald Eagles Project, thus the name of the Award in their honor. The Bald Eagle Project will help fulfill the vision and the mission for Athletics, and compliment the values of The King’s University College

Wilsman also closed the evening announcing plans for the implementation of a scholarship and athletic endowment fund, two Golf Tournaments and a revised Adopt-An-Eagle Booster Club for next years department projects.

Each of the Award winners also received their own personalized crystal trophy in honor of their award.
